TB UK261 - Inclusion of Clinical Justification on Leckey Quotes

09/05/2024

Clinical justification has always been available to assist when ordering Leckey products and usually provided on request. Feedback given to Leckey by therapists suggests that if this were available as part of the quote, it would have a positive impact on the time taken to approve and order the equipment needed, which reduces lead times considerably.

The benefit is that therapists will now be able to prove, with clinical references, that the product in the chosen specification is the best choice for the child.

As standard, clinical justification will now be added to quotes for the following products:

Leckey MyWay+

Leckey Horizon

ELLA

Leckey MyGo Stander

Leckey Squiggles+

Leckey Pronestander

Triton

Leckey BeMe

The justification itself is broken down into 4 main sections:

  • An overview of the benefits of the chosen type of equipment
  • Clinical reasons for specific products
  • Summary of the product benefits
  • Clinical references

An example of which is shown below:

CLINICAL JUSTIFICATION: BEME SEATING SYSTEM

 BENEFITS OF SUPPORTIVE SEATING

Supportive seating systems are an essential part of 24-hour postural management. Sitting is often the largest part of a child’s day, so supportive seats are arguably the most important piece of postural management equipment. Research has shown that supportive seating systems:

•                Increase head control which will assist with vision, communication, and socialisation.

•                Improve upper limb and hand function to enable better access to curriculum and to activities of daily living.

•                Assist bone, muscle and joint formation and positively influence hip health.

•                Increase stability and comfort which assists with postural control.

The social and cognitive benefits of sitting comfortably and interacting with family and peers will also improve sleep, concentration, and general wellbeing. An individualised set-up which continues to grow and adapt with a child’s ever-changing needs, ensures the child can take part in all normal activities of daily living: at home, at school or out in the community.

REASONS WHY THE BEME IS THE BEST SUPPORTIVE SEAT FOR THIS CHILD

The BeMe www.leckey.com/products/beme-seat is a versatile supportive seat which consists of three interchangeable seat bases (basic, split and contour) and three back supports (basic, moderate, and complex), which all click-and-fit to any of the three sizes of seat core. As well as being able to provide the perfect individualised fit for every child, it also means that as the child grows, or their needs change, a full new seating system is not required.

The following specification is required for this child.

SEAT BASE *Delete as appropriate:

•                Basic: The basic seat provides an appropriate level of postural support for this child. It is compatible with a variety of additional supports such as hip guides, femoral gables, and a pommel to support the pelvis and femurs while providing 5” of growth.

•                Split: The split seat base has two independently adjustable femoral supports and has been chosen for this child as it provides the asymmetrical support necessary to accommodate leg length difference/hip ab/adduction/windsweeping. The split seat provides 5” of growth.

•                Contoured: The contoured seat provides the optimum level of pelvic stability without the need for external hip guides or femoral gables and is the best solution for this child. The independently adjustable trochanteric supports, combined with an adjustable pre-ischial shelf create an ischial well which prevents sliding and maintains pelvic alignment. At the front, the femoral wells with integrated pommel encourage hip abduction and slight external rotation creating the optimum seated posture for hip joint development. The contoured cushion also offers 5” of growth.

BACK SUPPORT *Delete as appropriate.

•                Basic: A basic back support provides the optimum postural support for this child who has no spinal asymmetries. The basic back support is also compatible with all lateral supports and offers 5” of height adjustment.

•                Moderate: The moderate back support, with its three interconnecting height adjustable back segments, provides the optimal postural support for this child. It was chosen ahead of the basic BeMe backrest due to the rotational adjustment of the sacral segment. This set-up provides superior support to the developing spine, promoting an upright posture and improving head and upper limb function. The moderate backrest is also compatible with all laterals and offers 5” of growth.

•                Complex: The complex back support with its three-interconnecting height, depth and angle adjustable segments facilitates a 3D shape and is necessary to support this child’s asymmetric spine. It was chosen ahead of the moderate back support for its ability to accommodate asymmetry and misalignment of the trunk. Without this adjustability, the child’s spine will be unsupported affecting upper limb function, postural control, and risking further deterioration with associated long-term health complications.

DYNAMICS

A dynamic back support is required to moderate uncontrolled movements brought upon by motor and/or sensory dysregulation. If these movements were not accommodated it would cause discomfort to the child and potentially risk damage to the seat.

HI-LO CHASSIS

The tilting hi-lo chassis enables the BeMe to be used in a variety of settings at home or school where table height may vary.

The hi-lo function also improves communication and social interaction with young peers or with adults depending on the situation.

The tilt function assists with transfers and postural management and can be used for pressure relief or periods of rest.

*Delete as appropriate

A manual/hydraulic/powered option has been chosen to increase adjustability for the caregiver.

SUMMARY

The BeMe can be configured quickly and easily to provide the perfect fit for each child ensuring the best posture, function, and comfort throughout the day. Optimum stability to the limbs and lower body encourages an upright and functional position for all daily childhood activities. The unique postural needs of this child dictate that the BeMe seating system will provide the best and most cost-effective support for their long-term needs as they grow and develop
