We have been made aware via our post market surveillance and warranty process that a number of Quickie Q400M and Quickie Q500M Powered Wheelchairs have been reported to have increased noise emitting from the castor wheels.
If you have a chair that is reported to be making increased noise from the base, please review this bulletin alongside ‘TB UK248 - Q400 M & Q500 M Link Arm Bush’ to effectively identify the cause of this complaint
The root cause is due to small variances in the shore hardness of the castor wheel.
Where the shore hardness is too soft, over time and through natural use of the powered wheelchair the castor wheel can rotate around the rim. This movement causes the increased noise that has been reported by our customers.
Occurrence of this fault is extremely low and does not occur on every Q400M and Q500M – less than 0.02% of chairs manufactured have had this fault reported.
The fault is superficial and does not impact the performance or safety of the powered wheelchair, however we do acknowledge this is not as intended by our design and not welcomed by our customers and must be corrected.
Corrective Action
Medium - Long Term
We have updated the design of the Q400 M and Q500 M base assembly and supply chain to now use the same castor wheel used on the Q300 M Mini.
The QUICKIE Q300 M castor wheel has been used for over 5 years with no quality issues or complaints, and has proven to be a consistently reliable component, as well as being 100% retrofittable onto the Q400M and Q500M bases.
Due to the extremely low occurrences and superficial nature of the complaint we have not implemented this change into UK production ahead of our sub-supplier making this change.
New stock of the Q400 M and Q500 M base assembly containing the Q300 M Mini castor wheel is expected in the coming months, and we anticipate products manufactured in the UK plant after 1st April will have this change in place and you will be notified closer to the time via a technical bulletin.
Short Term
If you have a chair in the field that presents this issue it can be rectified by replacing the castor wheels with the Q300M Mini castor wheel, free of charge via our warranty department.
• Please use the part number 21508006 – Q300 M Mini 7 inch castor with axle, black rim (including Fixings)
• Part number 256209 & 256209-ET for the Q400M/Q500M castor wheel is now obsolete.
Occurrence of this fault is extremely low and does not occur on every Q400 M and Q500 M, with no adverse impact on performance and safety so no mandatory change is required.
If you experience this fault, please contact our warranty department who will provide you with a free of charge Q300 M Mini Castor wheel that will eradicate the fault.
