Their Journey

"I've had quite a life, where everything I have has come from sport."

Jovane Guissone

Born in Brazil, Jovane Guissone spent the majority of his childhood working in tobacco cultivation fields with his parents and other siblings. "I felt that it stole part of my childhood, but I don't complain - it made me more mature for my age, honest and to persevere". It was in 2004 when Jovane suffered an injury which resulted in him being a Paraplegic. Taking a gunshot wound which pierced his lung, spleen and spine, Jovane suffered a T7 complete and a universal lesion.

Discovering fencing through a friend, it helped Jovane overcome his injury and gave him direction - "When I compete I feel free. It's a game that can change in just one second. Fencing suits me as it's an individual sport, I'm a strong personality and I don't like to admit my mistakes, so I can dedicate 100% to it and improve myself without relying on others. I'm always looking to improve my game - it strengthens me as a person".

Qualifying for the 2012 Paralympic Games in London, Jovane had no financial support or sponsorship, just his determination to be the best. "I had nothing else to drive me but my courage, which resulted in me becoming a champion. I reached my goal faster than I ever expected". Eager to succeed, it's Jovane's goal to reach the top of the podium again and see his home-country flag of Brazil proudly flying. "I've had quite a life, where everything I have has come from sport, so I take it very seriously. I believe in my performance and will always do my utmost to ensure victory. It's my dream to be a champion and to raise my children with dignity".
