Wheelchair Basketball

Their Journey

"I've always liked all sports and practiced many of them, but as soon as I got to know about wheelchair basketball, I knew that this was the sport for me."

Asier García

Born in Pais Vasco, Spain in 1981, Asier Garcia has always enjoyed participating in sports. Unfortunately, a train accident in 1994 resulted in damage to Asier's upper limbs, requiring many operations and two years of wheelchair use and rehabilitation. Thankfully, Asier was able to make a recovery to a point where he was able to walk again, only requiring a wheelchair for longer distances.

It was after this rehabilitation where Asier first encountered wheelchair basketball - "When I was 19 years old, I met a player from the Bilbao team and he invited me to try it out. I got hooked from day one and I still am. I've always liked all sports and practiced many of them, but as soon as I got to know about wheelchair basketball, I knew that this was the sport for me. It's a very fast and spectacular sport with lots of contact. Plus I've always preferred team to individual sports".

Competing at London 2012, Asier was part of the first Spanish National Team to qualify for the event in 16 years. Also competing at the 2013 European Championships, Asier and his other Spanish National Team members finished the competition with a bronze medal. "Living with a very different group of people such as the members of your wheelchair basketball team gives you a chance to get to know your real teammates and their needs. This enriches you as a person and as a sportsman".

For the past 15 years, wheelchair basketball has been a way of life for Asier. Always evolving (both tactically and physically) to be the very best that he can be, Asier makes sacrifices every day in order to play at the highest quality - "I dedicate most of my time to it and thanks to it I've met the woman who is now my wife. My everyday life revolves around sports and I hope it can stay that way for many more years. We have a good chance to make history and we are working on getting as far as we possibly can. The goal is of course to win but at the same time to be realistic about the difficulty in doing so".

When training or competing, Asier García uses the RGK Elite Premium Basketball Wheelchair

"I just love my RGK Elite wheelchair. For one, I like how lightweight it is - but most important to me is its level of traction when I'm on the court."
